Handwriting Success with Getty-Dubay Italic Workbooks: Review

Do you want to introduce handwriting instruction into your homeschool? Are you looking for a simple system that is easy to teach and easy for kids to master? Have you tried other programs that leave your kids frustrated so that both you and they dread handwriting practice? I've got a great suggestion for you!

{I was given free copies of these workbooks and paid for my time to review the material. As always, all opinion are my own honest assessment. See disclosure.}

Introducing the Getty-Dubay Italic Script series from Handwriting Success

If you need a simple and efficient handwriting program for your students, you might want to check out the Getty-Dubay Italic series from Handwriting Success. This is an affordable and efficient program, perfect for large families!

They offer levels A - G for grades K-6. However, there is no need for older students to begin at level A. They may start with the book that corresponds to their grade level.

What is Getty-Dubay Italic Script?

When I was in school, we spent the first few years learning proper print handwriting and then the next few years learning cursive handwriting. Does this sound familiar?

Some of the letters were similar or the same between print and cursive alphabets. But some were strikingly different! The benefit of teaching your children Italic script is that it provides an easy transition from slanted print to connected letters.

In other words, once your child has mastered the Getty-Dubay Italic script, she will have the benefit of smooth and efficient writing that involves less lifting of the pen or pencil, but also uses essentially the same letter formation as traditional print.

In fact, the folks at Handwriting Success prefer to talk about "handwriting" rather than "penmanship" because they want to emphasize efficient letter formation to facilitate communication, rather than a focus on perfection and artistic skill.

What Italic Script Resources Are Available from Handwriting Success?

Handwriting Workbooks

The core of this handwriting series are the seven grade-level aligned workbooks, A-G for grades K-6. The pages are clean and crisp black-line handwriting worksheets. At the front of each workbook is a summary instruction page giving you, the parent, guidance to provide instruction and assessment in handwriting. More support and information is available in the teacher's guide - one book that covers all seven levels of instruction.

Handwriting App

This is the digital age, after all, so in addition to the traditional workbooks, Handwriting Success has also introduced a handwriting app available on both iOS and Android. You'll want to check the specifications to make sure your tablet and stylus will work with this program. Each of the original workbooks is available in app version!

Handwriting Fonts

Another fabulous option offered by Handwriting Success are downloadable handwriting fonts! Once you've installed these fonts on your computer, you can use them to create word lists, handwriting practice, copywork and more using the exact same script found in the Getty-Dubay handwriting series!
